About San Marcos
San Marcos is a small town, located near the San
Marcos River, Blanco River and Guadalupe River, with
easy access to IH-35. Conveniently situated in
Central Texas between Austin and San Antonio, San
Marcos is really in the center of everything.
San Marcos was founded in 1851 by William Lindsey,
Gen. Edward Burleson and Eli T. Merriman and
incorporated in 1877. The legend connected to this
town’s name states that Franciscan Monks discovered
a clear river with large springs at its source.
Because the discovery was made on St. Mark's Day,
they called the river San Marcos.
If you are an outdoors enthusiast we suggest you
visit the Guadalupe River and Aquarena Springs, the
primary source of the San Marcos River, rising from
hundreds of fissures under Spring Lake. A short
drive north of San Marcos, you will discover Texas
State Capitol in Austin and more great attractions
such as Zilker Park (Botanical Gardens, Nature and
Science Center).
The best water park in the country, Schlitterbahn
Waterpark Resort, is just 15 miles South of San
Marcos. Try out the rich variety of shopping,
entertainment, arts and dining in San Marcos and
explore the wonder of the Texas Hill Country and San
Marcos’ crystal clear, spring-fed river.
San Marcos is also known as an outlet shopping
Mecca. You will find the perfect gifts for your
loved ones at home if you stop by the Tanger Outlet
Center and Prime Outlets-San Marcos.
So whether you're traveling on business, a romantic
getaway, or a family vacation,, San Marcos always
has something to celebrate!
